Your Directors are considering offering electronic distribution of the RIG
to the members who prefer this mode of distribution. The paper version
would continue to be distributed to those who like it that way.
Preliminary thinking suggests that cost of printing the RIG, our
organization’s largest expense item, may be reduced substantially. In
addition, postal rates in Canada have climbed substantially, especially in
2014. The postal services on both sides of the border are under pressure
to reduce their levels of services too. Snail mail could get even slower
than it is now, especially cross border. We might return to four issues a
year If the costs are reduced substantially (and we can find the content).
The RIG is already produced in PDF format now as required by the printer we
use. On the surface then, distributing the RIG on the net is simply sending
that PDF file to the members instantly and for “free”. There are
ramifications that have to be understood though in having two different
distribution modes, but we want you to think about it. Those with email
addresses in our membership files will be contacted If the decision is to
proceed to select their preferred method.
